How to Repair a Dead Car Key
Extreme cold or extreme heat can sometimes cause a car to stop working. It is best to wait a few minutes before spending money to replace it.
If your car keys get damaged it can be a major problem. And it always occurs at the most inconvenient timing! You can repair a broken key without needing to purchase a new one.
Dead Key Fob Battery
Modern key fobs allow us to open trunks, doors and tailgates, without having to search for a physical key. Some key fobs have an integrated key that can be utilized to start our vehicles. However, these devices are dependent on a small battery that powers their remote functions. If the battery fails, the key fob will not be able to transmit a signal that can activate the vehicle. There are several methods to fix a dead vehicle key fob.
First, check if the key fob is actually dead. If it seems to be, then you'll need to replace the battery. You can do it yourself by disconnecting the fob from its clip, or by using a flat-head screwdriver. Be cautious not to put too much pressure on the fob or you could end up damaging the fob. Also, make sure that you're using the correct type of battery. The majority of key fobs utilize the CR2032 3-Volt battery, however some models may require a different type. Find out the kind of battery your car requires by consulting the owner's manual, or go to an Interstate All Battery Center and have a battery specialist help you.
If key fob repairs isn't dead, you may be able to revive it by moving closer to your vehicle. The majority of key fobs employ RFID (radio frequency identification) which operates at a short distance. The ignition system must be able to detect the signal. You can unlock your car, or even start it if you move few inches nearer.
Many car manufacturers have backup mechanisms that is activated when the battery of the key fob is dead. For example, most Ford models have a dedicated slot for the key fob which will activate the engine when it is properly inserted. Refer to the owner's manual for details on how to locate the slot and how to insert the key fob. If you're unable to start the car using this method, contact roadside assistance.
Broken Key Ring
The key fob's internal chip is what communicates with your car's immobilizer system to start the engine. This chip can be damaged or there may be programming mistakes. If this happens, your key fob won't be able to send the correct identification code and your car won't begin. In some instances the problem with a defective transponder key could also be caused by physical damage or wear and tear to the key shell or contact pads.
Usually the moment the key fob begins to fail to communicate with the vehicle's immobilizer system and you notice specific warning indicators on the dashboard. These include error messages flashing lights, or the key not locking the vehicle. If you are noticing these warnings contact your local locksmith immediately to request a replacement key fob or repair.
It's easy to damage your key ring by putting too excessive pressure on it, particularly when carrying a lot of keys. This could cause the key fob to split in half this is one of the most common causes of broken car keys. If this happens, try using super glue to fix the issue by applying a small amount the glue on both sides of the break and pressing them in a controlled manner. It is essential to apply a gel-type adhesive that dries slowly to prevent drips or runniness.
If this method isn't working and you are not sure, seek out a professional locksmith as soon as possible to prevent further damage to your vehicle. A locksmith who is qualified can repair or replace your fob swiftly and ensure that the ignition and door locks aren't damaged in the process.

Broken Key Loop
One of my MK5 keysfobs fell off the tiny key ring that is at the top, which is where it connects to the keyfob. It's made of plastic or metal that is soft. I've made a hole, then wet-sanded the surface to make it more durable. But I suspect that's not helping.
I've also tried wrapping the broken portion of the ring with clear tape, but it does not seem to do any good. It's a shame, since I use the little rings to keep my keys in place on the mini-split ring that holds the bigger split ring for the other keyfobs.
If the case of the key fob is damaged, you could usually open it and replace the battery, if it isn't already dead. There are online kits available however they're only a temporary solution. It is more efficient to get it fixed by a professional. You may also find the replacement case at an home improvement store or a locksmith. They're unlikely to be as costly as an entirely new key fob.
